Long time since I posted something. Lots has come up. Anyways, I was recently contacted by someone and figured I would share my thoughts on the subject.
This person asked me "Why was Christ baptized?" Did John the Baptist have to baptize him? Why would someone perfect need to be baptized? In this letter, they also wanted to know if it was only because, at the time, Christ was "mortal." That brings me to another discussion for another day.
So, Christ was baptized by John, which we all know. And we also know that in order to obtain the highest degree of heaven, certain requirements are required, perhaps commanded. One is to be baptized and receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost. We see this in Luke (3:22) where the Holy Ghost "descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him." The heavens opened and the Lord said "Thou are my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased" (Luke 3:22).
To go back on topic, I believe that even though Christ was perfect, he still had to follow the commandments. Would it be possible to be perfect without following ALL of God's commandments? To not do something is just like doing something wrong in my eyes (ever have someone tell you that with-holding information is the same as lying? It goes along a parallel process).
In my personal belief, I believe that to be the Savior, Christ had to do and experience all of the Lord's commandments. Being a perfect man who does not follow each commandment, is really just a good person.
